Learn how to back up the device configuration to a PC or network server using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
A restore from back up can only be performed on the same version of firmware on which the back up was made, and the printer model and print speed of the printer on which it was created.

Backup the device configuration during a firmware upgrade
Learn how to back up the device configuration during a firmware upgrade using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
A back up of the device configuration can be made and stored on the printer just before performing a firmware upgrade to a newer release of HP FutureSmart firmware.
This feature preserves the current product settings in a back up which will be stored on the device. If for some reason the upgraded version of firmware is not working as expected, the back up of the device configuration can be restored by downgrading the firmware to the same version of firmware that was on the device when the back up was performed.
This can be useful if there are any issues with the device after the upgrade and or if the administrator just wants to revert to a previous version of firmware with minimal re-configuration needed.
-
Open the Embedded Web Server.
-
Select the Troubleshooting tab.
-
Select the Firmware Upgrade option from the left pane.
-
Under the Automatic Back up/Restore section , select the Automatic Back up/Restore check box.
-
Click Save.
NOTE:If the Save button is grayed out, clear the check box and then click the Save button to clear the previous backup; and then re-select the Automatic Backup/Restore check box and click Save to activate the back up of the existing device configuration.
-
Under the Install New Firmware section, select the firmware file and click Install.
Just before the upgrade is performed, a backup will be made. The Embedded Web Server screen will be greyed out like a normal upgrade and the 'Upgrading Firmware.…' dialog will display.
Restore the device configuration
Learn how to restore the device configuration using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
After a backup has been created, it can be used to rollback the firmware version and restore the previous configuration on the same device. The restore can only be performed on the same version of firmware on which the backup was made, and the printer model and print speed of the printer on which it was created.
The restore will automatically occur when the firmware downgrade is performed on the same device in which the back up was created for the same version of firmware from which the backup was initiated. For example:
FutureSmart Bundle Version 4.7 [backup made] >>>> Upgrade to FutureSmart Bundle Version 4.9 >>>> Downgrade back to FutureSmart Bundle Version 4.7 [Backuprestored]... The Backup would not be restored to 4.5.
Device configurations that will be restored include Email, Fax, Quick Sets and Address Books.
The following configurations will not be restored and must be re-configured:
-
The Administrator Password
-
Stored Copy and Print Jobs
-
Device configurations made on a newer firmware version when performing a rollback and restore.
NOTE:When the printer is downgraded, these configurations will be lost and the back up device configurations from the older firmware will be restored.
-
Open the Embedded Web Server.
-
Select the General tab.
-
Select the Back up and Restore option from the left pane.
-
Under the Back up/Restore section, select the Restore option.
-
Click OK.
-
Click Rollback.
The firmware version is reverted to the previous version and the device configurations from that version are restored from the backup. The Embedded Web Server screen will be greyed out like a normal upgrade and the 'Downgrading Firmware.…' dialog will display.
NOTE:Some devices will present the Date and Time Wizard which will make it look like the backup was not performed.
